Youth Specialist-Passageways Shelter

Starting in December of 2017, I became a youth specialist at Passageways-The Link which is an emergency shelter for sexually exploited and/or trafficked youth.  As a youth specialist I connect with the youth one-on-one and in groups, help youth engage in various groups such as drumming and art therapy, and build a respectful relationship.  This work has really improved my practice as a social worker.

Intern at Hopkins North Junior High

From August 2016-May 2017, I interned at Hopkins North Junior High.   Hopkins North Junior High is an International Baccalaureate World School that offers the Middle Years Program.  "It encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life. The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning."

At NJH I completed assessments that identified factors that impact student learning; created and implemented interventions with students individually and in groups; evaluated the effectiveness of such interventions; gained experience writing a PLAAFP, goals, and objectives for student IEPs; became involved in grant writing and program implementation for Latino students; utilized community, school, and family resources; and participated in social work department meetings, grade-level team meetings, ASSIST meetings, and child study meetings.

Intern at OutFront Minnesota

From August 2015 to April 2016, I interned with the Anti-Violence Program at OutFront MN in Minneapolis.  There I received extensive training serving victims and survivors of violence, provided crisis and peer counseling and interventions, distributed LGBTQ sensitive information and referrals, provided personal and court advocacy, and Co-facilitated an outreach small group with LGBTQIAA at-risk youth.

The organization itself does more macro work, so I was lucky to have the opportunity to see the different levels of change in action.

Serving Lunch at Our Redeemer

In the summer of 2016, I was a nanny for five children.  We committed to serving lunches for a summer camp that was held at Our Redeemer Church in North Minneapolis.  In addition to serving lunch, we set up tables and chairs, washed tables, and helped clean up.  We were even lucky enough to read with the campers once as well as play at the park and swim with them!

DGF Student Council Supervisor

In student council, 4th and 5th graders are able to demonstrate their leadership skills by hosting fundraisers.  They decide many of the actions of student council based on the needs they retrieve from their fellow peers.  One example is wanting to change the plastic silverware in the cafeteria to reuseable silverware.

The biggest project we did when I was a supervisor was the Fill the Dome Food Drive.  Donations were given to local food pantries. Another exciting fundraiser was pop tab collections for the Ronald McDonal houses in Fargo.  Doing this brought in additional funds for families who are in need of home-like comfort, care, and support while their child is receiving medical care.  Finally, we collected box tops both years to raise money for Glyndon-Felton Elementary.

Painting the Pride Collective and Community Center

In the summer of 2014, The Pride and Collective and Community Center in Fargo, ND relocated.  The building needed a lot of attention and revamping.  There was a need for painters, and this was my contribution.

Math & Reading Family Fun Night

Glyndon-Felton Elementary hosted math and reading family nights.  My job during math family fun night was to sit with students and families as they utilized different math websites.  On reading family fun night, I ran the book fair cash register and helped monitor students who were playing reading games on provided websites.

Day of Caring, United Way

While working for Lake Park Audubon Elementary and while in High School myself, I participated in The Day of Caring.  With my 6th grade students, we picked up trash from the ditch in our community.  As a high school student, I raked leaves for a senior at her home.

Sewing Fleece Hats

While teaching at Dilworth Glyndon Felton Schools as a 5th grade teacher, we cut and sewed a plethora of hats.  Extras were donated to Churches United for Homeless and students at our school who came to school without a winter hat.

In my early twenties, I volunteered with The American Heart Association on their annual heart walk in Detroit Lakes.  I didn't have a specific job but was given tasks before the race started.
